PP071 : How To Learn From An Online Course
Online courses are a normal part of learning now. But how do you take advantage of them and actually learn? Here is my approach to learning from courses (for the last 10 years).
One of the problems I’ve experienced as both a course creator AND a course learner is when we think we want the course, but just purchase it, and put it on the shelf “just in case”.
Here are the 4 ways I intentionally make sure I learn from any online course I take.
Why does this matter?
Think through what you are hoping to learn from the course. Figure out what is at stake and how the learning can change things. Write it down.Schedule time for the course.
It might be a cohort, with scheduled meetings. Or it could be a self-paced course. Either way, you need to schedule time for learning AND the homework that comes with the course.Declare a zone.
Trying to learn from the course and apply it broadly will be difficult. Instead, think of a way you can focus the course content into something immediately applicable to you.Wrap it up with sharing.
One of my favorite parts of some courses is interacting with both the people I am learning with and the people I am learning from.
