PP50 4 Kinds of Distraction

Do you get distracted? No matter how well you try to work, distraction can creep in. So let’s talk about 4 different types of distractions and how we can learn to get around each one of them.

4 Kinds of Distraction

Not all distraction is the same. To understand how it affects us AND how we can beat the struggle we have to diagnose where our distraction is coming from and why we are tempted.

Shiny Object Syndrome
Shiny Object Syndrome can easily affect those leaders who LOVE the future. The moment we tend to get bored, or a project hits the point we are no longer excited about it, we love to find a new thing to focus on (or chase).

How to get around it?
We have to change our relationship to outcomes. In doing this, we learn how to find positive energy in completing things.

Lack of Focus/Clarity
This is a parent emotion for much of distraction. When we are generally bored or are hitting a ministry wall, we don’t have the focus we need to see things through. Many times we are at a ministry wall.

How to get around it?
I love the practice of understanding personal ministry vision to set the tone for what’s next. I did an entire episode of the podcast (episode 14) about the process AND I do tons of ministry coaching helping others define their personal ministry vision.

Interruptions
Here’s the dirty secret. Rarely are other people the problem here. Interruptions are the things we allow into our schedule that hurt our focus.

How to get around it?
Do a time audit. It’s the best tool I know to really understand both schedules and motivations. Episode 2 of the podcast goes through time audits, and I give a free resource away. Or you can grab the Becoming Productive course to create your own personal approach to productivity.

Chaos
Sometimes chaos truly enters in. During these moments it’s important for us to have a realignment of situational basics. We determine what absolutely has to happen.

How to get around it?
Determine the most important thing to do in the situation. Then ONLY do that.
