PP 014 Personal Ministry Vision

Have you ever become exhausted from decision-making in ministry?

Many pastors feel the need to be a generalist in too many ways and forget that taking a call to ministry is deeply personal and wrapped up in the uniqueness of their personal creation by God.

In this episode of Productive Pastor, I get a little Bible nerdy and go into how I have become fascinated with understanding good, bad, and radically normal decision-making in the Bible. And I share how that creates a story to understand the necessity of personal ministry vision.

Simply stated, the leaders’ boundaries define and shape what is going to be and what isn’t.
— Henry Cloud | Boundaries for Leaders
  1. Who Am I?

Digging deep into any personal work to discern and understand call has to begin with ourselves. It is a trickle-down affair. If we are operating out of a broken understanding of our own call, or we are simply being generic, we are going to struggle to honestly understand how to lead in a healthy way.

Here is a quick drawing that shows how these things filter down.

2. What Do I Do?

What are the things you would call your “track record”? These are the things that we would name as our passion, and we have the follow-through to show it. This can be difficult because we might feel like we have some named passions, but we have never acted upon them. It’s OK to call these dreams or wishes…but what we are trying to look at here is tangible expressions of how we have already uniquely done things. It’s those elements of truth where we see God working.

3. How Will I Lead Our Work?

When we have started to go through the tough work of tangible discernment, we will probably have success stories and failure stories. The trick is to learn from both of those and begin building an understanding of how you can uniquely fit into any scenario. In coaching, I love to use the Gallup Strengthfinders model to discover and talk about these things.
