How to Not Waste a Conference: PP115

Today, we tackle the topic of making the most out of conferences, especially ministry conferences. If you're a frequent conference-goer, this episode will help you strategically maximize your experience and avoid common pitfalls.

The Problem with Conferences

  • Information Overload: Conferences can be overwhelming, acting like an information firehose.

  • Future Vomit: The risk of overwhelming your team with too many new ideas immediately after returning from a conference.

Strategies for Making the Most of Conferences

Before the Conference

  1. Note-Taking System:

    • Establish an efficient note-taking system (digital or analog).

    • Chad's preference shifted from digital (GoodNotes app) to a hybrid system incorporating analog methods.

“Learning isn’t learning if it cannot be used.”

During the Conference

  1. Take Effective Notes:

    • Focus on current projects and concerns.

    • Use book flags and post-it notes for important points.

  2. Networking:

    • Connect with two strategic groups:

      • People like you: Those in the same ministry season or context.

      • People you need: Individuals who are a few steps ahead and can be mentors or provide specific advice.

    • Utilize business cards and maintain a list of contacts to follow up with.

After the Conference

  1. Transfer and Organize Notes:

    • Move analog notes into a permanent digital system for easy retrieval.

    • Categorize and tag notes for future reference.

  2. Process Information:

    • Develop action plans for immediate issues and adapt current strategies based on new learning.

    • File useful information for future concerns in a well-organized knowledge system.

  3. Follow Up with Contacts:

    • Send emails or connect on social platforms with people you've met.

    • Maintain ongoing conversations and collaborations with peers.

  4. Thank Presenters:

    • Reach out and thank workshop presenters for their time and insights.

    • Connect with them on social platforms for future reference and networking.
