PP067 How Do You Learn?

Learning seems like a simple thing. As kids, we learn things all the time. We read books, engage content, watch YouTube as adults and learn new things.

But what do we do when we need to learn new things to level up in life? That’s when understanding learning starts to matter.

As ministry leaders, personal growth is part of the gig. We lead churches and individuals toward growth. But what about when we need to grow? This is a process we need to internalize and understand as individuals. It is only then we can begin to lead our congregations in growth.

I like to talk about these events with the idea of “ministry walls”, those moments when we know we have reached a place we can’t go further. We either have to be content and stay at the same place, or make our way over the wall towards a new horizon.

Ministry Walls Essay

Here are 4 steps towards identifying and creating growth in our own life.

Conscious Competence Theory

This has been one of my favorites over the last year. It is by far one of the best ways we can understand the path toward new growth.

The biggest part of this is understanding where the behavior that needs to grow, or the learning that needs to happen exists inside this paradigm.

Assessments

If we are entering into a learning journey, one of the most powerful things we can do is find a coach certified in specific assessments to help us understand ourselves better. I am a big fan of CliftonStrengths for this work.

The Yellow Pad by Robert Rubin

I picked up this book earlier in the summer out of general intrigue. It was probably my favorite read of the summer, and perhaps the year. Rubin’s memoir is a story of decision-making, and it is FULL of incredible stories that highlight the idea of personal values and how they direct our decisions.

Episode 14 | Personal Ministry Vision

Create a Development Plan

Once the learning has been identified, and the work has been done to understand how this uniquely relates to you, the next step is to create a development plan. This will be a personal journey with both input and output goals to help you not just realize something, but internalize and then actualize it in your life.
