PP046 Staying Productive While Traveling

Have you ever had one of those weeks were you can only be in the office for a couple of days, and then have to spend some time on the road. There is a temptation to squeeze a whole week of work into a couple of days.

That would be a mistake.

So let's talk about 4 ways we can make the most of the time, and stay productive on these weird weeks.

The biggest mistake we can make during these “semi-wash weeks” is to try to cram a whole week worth of work into a couple of days. That will leave us exhausted, and at a deficit for whatever we are changing our schedule for.

We don’t want to do that.

Instead, I want to share 4 things to think about as we readjust our schedule to be more appropriate during times like this.

1. Focus on the small ball.
I talk about small ball throughout the Becoming Productive course, but in essence, small ball are the seemingly insignificant tasks that lead to significant results. And they can be a myriad of things, but what if you dedicate an entire day to working through small ball tasks?

2. Create a full wash.
What are the things you would love to do, but could never convince yourself to give an entire day or half a day? Well, these weeks are perfect to break the rules and do just this. Spend an entire afternoon meeting with someone. Schedule that doctor’s visit you’ve been putting off. Take a long breakfast meeting.

3. Set your expectations (but set them low).
Have a plan for the week, but don’t go overboard. Keep your ideas for what can be accomplished within reason.

4. Plan your way back in.
Don’t come into the next week in a flurry of catch-up. Instead, be strategic over what it means to come back into a full, and normal week in the office.
