PP045 Guitar Playing and Systems Building
I’ve played music most of my life. And after nearly a decade of just puttering around, I’ve refocused this year to become a better player. And after experiencing the same frustrations I have for most of my life, I stumbled upon a different style of guitar lesson videos. And even while going through the first one, I realized there is an amazing parallel lesson to building systems in ministry.
So let’s talk about why some leaders and churches struggle with systems.
“5 Level’s of ”videos on YouTube have really helped me understand how to play songs completely. The teaching method makes sure you understand the essential building blocks of a song, and any of the complexity is there supporting the very basics. What Our systems need to be exactly like that.
Here are the 5 Levels of a health church system.
Level 1 | What and Why
Sometimes you need to just get something done. But at other times, a repeating task or larger process needs to be standardized. The very basics of understanding systems building are trying to get as clear about what needs to be done, and why it needs a system. This clarity step will help guide decisions in the future and avoid unnecessary complexities.
Level 2 | When does this happen?
A system repeats. It’s naturally rhythmic. At this point, you need to gather the people who have ownership of the end result together and start deciding on the calendar the system will follow. This is important because some steps might need to happen at different times (and even with different people).
Level 3 | What are the basic practices?
This is the step people want to instantly jump towards. But this is actually the intermediate step. What you are going for at this place is the minimum viable product. And if you follow steps 1-3, what you will end up creating is something that gets you a really solid value. But remember, keep it simple.
Level 4 | What makes the most sustainable or repeatable
By now you have run the system. After an amount of time (depending on the system), you need to start back at step 1, reevaluate the results and potentially add a few new steps in or change up the process a bit. But this is only done well when it is already well-oiled.
Level 5 | The Final State
When you’ve reached a certain point, it’s time to put down your knives and step away. Quit tinkering. Seal the system up, declare it a standard operating procedure, and call it finished.
