Preaching

You can’t have a season of Productive Pastor without an episode about preaching?

Well, here it is! In this episode, I share a few things about how my own preaching preparation has been changing and what my current (2022) preparation rhythm has been like.

How My Preparation Has Changed

In the last couple of years, I have moved from creating a year-long preaching calendar to being more comfortable thinking of things in 3-month chunks. Most of this has happened because I am trying to do 2 things, and they are related. The first is I want to be preaching inside of the context and community I pastor (look down below for a free worksheet on navigating this). The second is related in that I don’t want to be creating a “preaching island”; some sort of topic or idea that doesn’t relate to my congregation and I just want to talk about it.

So instead, I focus one preaching through the things I have discerned through prayer and personal worship AND inside of conversations I have been having with people inside of my congregation and community.

My Preparation Rhythm

The cornerstone of my preparation is my private devotional life. I don’t necessarily draw from my devotional work, but I know that it is necessary for me to be in a spiritually healthy state to do any of my ministry. I rely on my “dumping ground” to hold ideas and be a place to process things as they turn into series and messages. I then plan out larger preaching seasons from this place.
