Relationships And Responding
Welcome to the latest episode of Productive Pastor!
No one would say that ministry is an easy job. One of the difficult things about it is how we manage multiple levels of relationships with many different people. This episode is all about how we can do that in ways that are both healthy AND strategic.
The episode is broken up into two parts. The first is about why relationships can be difficult in church because we are manage multiple layers of people. Dunbar’s Number is a piece of social theory that looks at how most people can have around 150 stable social relationships. If you are leading an average sized church, that will pretty much max you out!!! So we have to learn about what it takes to think about relationships strategically and to prioritize them based off of what they are.
One of the best ways I have ever learned how to do this was in Mike Breen’s book Leading Kingdom Movements and his concept of orbits.
Relationships function in orbit with their proximity to us (how close we are) and their frequency (how often we come together). Breen does a fantastic job showing how this style of relation focused leadership is lived out in the life of the Apostle Paul.
Mike Breen’s Orbit idea when worked out in a few basic relational structures.
The second part of our episode breaks down 4 places we can build intention and focus.
