PP020 Strategy As A Decision Making Tool

Hey friends. We are back with the 2nd episode in a short 3-episode mini-series on decision making. It is based on an email I sent to the Productive Pastor Email list earlier this summer. Today we are going to talk about 3 questions we ask to understand strategic intentionality.

Much of what I have been thinking about lately is influenced by the work of Alan Roxburgh and Mark Lau Branson. I talked about the two of them in the past episode, but if you want to learn from these tremendous theologians and practitioners, there are really three books to grab.

Leadership, God’s Agency, and Disruptions (the one I have been talking about for a year). This is by both of them.
Joining With God in the Great Unraveling | Alan Roxburgh
Memories, Hopes, and Conversations: Appreciative Inquiry, Missional Engagement, and Congregational Change | Mark Lau Branson

Their writing has made me rethink parts of strategic thinking in favor of awareness and the idea of what God is already doing.

So let’s talk about a statement and two questions that help us make sure our strategic decision-making keep us focused on being uniquely Christian.

  1. Who you are?

  2. What needs to happen?

  3. What do we need to do?
