PP79 : Three Follow-up Sequences

How often do you think strategically about follow-up sequences? Sure, most pastors know they need to follow up with 1st time guests. But follow-up systems can be found all over the church. They are an incredible way to approach development as part of discipleship. Let me share a few ideas with you.

All of this started with a conversation on Twitter a few weeks back. I was talking with someone and mentioned having follow-up sequences for first-time giving and first-time serving. I realized I wanted to do an episode and go deeper into this idea. And not just offer up a few ideas, but think through how our approach to follow-up can be more strategic.

Three Levels of Belonging.

Creating any sort of follow-up means we are hoping for a result. That result is always about another person’s understanding of how they belong to something larger than themselves.

This quick framework helps us understand how we can design these systems.

Designing these sorts of systems can easily be broken down into three larger questions.

  1. How are we interacting with this person on a personal level?

  2. How are we creating a sense of belonging?

  3. How are we integrating them with other believers who are on the same journey?

I find it easiest to do this by separating a handful of people (the pastor in several cases) having a personal thank-you and encouragement conversation and letting the church handle the more “institutional/informational” side of the follow-up in an official way. Make sure to check out the episode to hear the specific ways we can do this.
