7 Bowls…10.22
Each week I post a list of 7 articles, videos, podcasts or other things I have found interesting this week. This edition is about nerdy archeological reconstruction, Bible translation controversies, prayer and great ways to learn more about your favorite musical artist.
Virtual Recreation of St. Paul’s Catherdral in London | NC State
A few years ago I stumbled across an NPR segment on a digital recreation of what worship sounded like in the Hagia Sophia in modern day Istanbul, but back when it was a Christian church and in ancient times. They used a modern day technology to create an architectural accurate reverb of the space. That alone was pretty cool. I came across this whole website showing a 17th century recreation of Anglican worship in London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral, complete with worship services and all sorts of other interesting things. If the history of Christian worship is interesting, or just worship in general…this is a great website to go loose a few hours of your time in.
Bandsplain Podcast | Spotify Studios and Yasi Salek
A friend of mine (HT: Todd Rossnagel), who is an even bigger fan of Wilco than I am, told me about this podcast earlier this week. Since I had a 3 hour drive ahead of me, I gave it a shot. Bandsplain is a fantastic long form podcast that spend several hours explaining the history and artistry of musical acts, complete with full songs played as part of the show. I really dig it.
Deconstructing the ESV: A Historian’s Response to Kevin DeYoung | Beth Allison Bar
It is no secret that I am a Bible nerd. And for the last few years I have been using a translation that I am not the biggest fan of, but because of the editions available, it has been my usual translation. I don’t preach from the ESV, but my daily reader is a Cambridge Wide Margin Hardback. This Bible is only available in the ESV. Lately I have had some friends really start to challenge my use because of some pretty serious points of theological incongruence of the ESV with my theology. This article really starts chasing down some of the bias that is part of this Bible translation and has me rethinking several different things.
Lectio365 | 24/7 Prayer
Most mornings, as I am trying to shake sleep off and settle in with my cup of coffee, I turn on the Lectio365 app and calm myself. It is a fantastic tool from the folks at 24/7 Prayer for morning and evening prayers. I learn things, often stop to read scripture and reflect, and then turn it back on. I tend to fill my instagram story feed in the morning with screenshots of this app. If you are interested in prayer, make sure to grab it.
With Christ in the School of Prayer | Andrew Murray
For the last year, I have been having a devotional conversation with Andrew Murray. His book “The Master’s Indwelling” was a fantastic read earlier this year and it really helped me wrap my head around sin, freedom, and sanctification in a great way. Lately I have been spending time each morning with a chapter of “With Christ in the School of Prayer” and really enjoying my reflections of it. I keep going back to chapter 5, which is about Christ’s call to "ask, seek, and knock.”
Morning Bible Study Setup Finished | Jason Mayfield | YouTube
My internet friend Jason Mayfield is a big reason I came up with my Bible markup system. This video came out earlier this week and it is a great look at his morning devotional practice. At the end, he ended giving me a big shoutout that made my day. Thanks Jason. If you are into learning how other folks do their devotion, this is a great video.
BibleProject | Bible Project | Podcast
Back to my Bible nerdery (is that even a word? And if so, did I spell it right?). On this weeks aformentioned long drive, I stumbled across the BibleProject’s podcast. I have been a big fan of their YouTube videos and didn’t know they had a podcast. It is a great longer discussion of all of my favorite types of things. If you like any Bible related content, this is a great listen.
